In Iseo, every Advent weekend brings 'Natale con Gusto' — a market with crafts and gourmet stalls in the old town. On 8 December, Sale Marasino (Conche district) holds the historic Santa Lucia market with roast suckling pig and music.

The neighbouring towns of Lovere and Sarnico shine as 'towns of light' with tens of thousands of lamps. On Monte Isola, Father Christmases and light parades move through the mountain villages — the calm on the car-free island is then almost fairy-tale, ideal with children.

After New Year: Franciacorta season

After the turn of the year, the wine season starts in Franciacorta — with gala halls and balloon flights (events at the Franciacorta Village). A tasting at a winery is possible in winter too, often even more relaxed than in high season; book in advance.

There are also walks by the lake, the Torbiere del Sebino nature reserve in the clear winter air, and the regional cuisine — polenta, lake fish and a glass of Franciacorta warm the day.

Practicalities for winter

The Navigazione Lago d'Iseo ferries run in winter too — between Sulzano and Monte Isola about every 15–20 minutes, and hourly at night until about midnight. Individual lines or times may be reduced, so check the timetable in advance.

Warm, waterproof clothing and shoes with grip make sense; some smaller shops and restaurants have reduced opening hours in the off-season. Our apartment Little Mier has heating and air conditioning and is usable year-round.

New Year & New Year's Eve by the lake

In Iseo, Sarnico and Lovere there are small fireworks over the lake on New Year's Eve. Restaurants are usually fully booked — reserve early, some offer a New Year's Eve menu. Monte Isola is especially quiet and atmospheric at the turn of the year; the last ferry back also runs at night.

If you want to spend New Year without crowds, Lago d'Iseo is just right: no packed party-street atmosphere, but a glass of Franciacorta by the shore, fresh air and good food.

Sport & activities in winter

Hiking is possible in winter too — the trails around Iseo, the climb to the Colle di Santa Maria del Giogo and the loops through the Torbiere del Sebino are snow-free. When there is snow, the Bergamo pre-Alps (Presolana, Colere, Lizzola) offer ski areas less than an hour's drive away.

Cycling the Ciclovia dell'Oglio on clear winter days is a special experience — barely any traffic, quiet shores, clear views of the snow-capped mountains.

What is open in winter?

Iseo old town with its restaurants, bars and supermarkets is open year-round. The weekly markets (Tuesdays and Fridays) run in winter too. Lidos and open-air pools take a winter break; many smaller trattorias in the holiday villages have limited opening hours.

Monte Isola runs year-round on a reduced timetable. The Torbiere del Sebino are freely accessible all year. Wineries in Franciacorta receive guests by appointment in winter too — and then often have more time for detailed tours.

A perfect winter weekend by the lake

Friday — Arrive in Iseo, an evening stroll through 'Natale con Gusto' in the old town: mulled wine, regional specialities and aperitivo among the stalls. Stay centrally, e.g. at Little Mier (heating, usable year-round).

Saturday — In the morning the weekly market in Iseo (Tue/Fri) or the ferry to Monte Isola, winter-quiet and almost deserted. Lunch of polenta and lake fish in a trattoria. In the afternoon on to Lovere or Sarnico, which shine as 'towns of light' with tens of thousands of lamps.

Sunday — A tasting in Franciacorta (more relaxed in winter, book ahead) or a clear winter walk through the Torbiere del Sebino. To finish, a glass of Franciacorta by the shore before heading home.
