Torbiere del Sebino: Nature Reserve on the Southern Shore
The Riserva Naturale Torbiere del Sebino lies immediately south of Iseo, between the lake and the hills of Franciacorta. Former peat workings have become a valuable wetland — today one of the most important in Lombardy and a designated nature reserve.
For visitors this means flat paths and wooden boardwalks through reeds, ponds with water lilies (a spectacular sight in early summer) and good chances of spotting waterbirds. A peaceful contrast to the lively town of Iseo.
Paths & orientation
Marked routes lead over embankments and wooden boardwalks through the reserve; the loops are short and flat, easily done in one to two hours. There are signposted entrances — in season a small entry fee is sometimes charged.
Sturdy but not hiking footwear is fine; after rain the boardwalks can be slippery.
Best time & wildlife
Early morning is ideal — quieter and better for birdwatching. Water lilies bloom in May and June. Numerous waterbirds live in the reed beds and ponds; binoculars are worthwhile.
Please stay on the paths, keep dogs on leads and keep quiet — the reserve is sensitive.

What the Torbiere show and when.
Good to combine
Above the Torbiere stands the monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa with views over the wetland — a rewarding short detour. From there it is only a short hop to the wine estates of Franciacorta. A cycling tour on the Ciclovia dell'Oglio can also follow.
From Little Mier in Iseo you can reach the nearest entrance in just a few minutes by bicycle or a short drive.
Access & entry
There are several access points; the main entrance with information board is on the Via per Provaglio d'Iseo south of Iseo. In summer (approximately May–September) a small fee is charged at staffed entrances (around €1–2 per person); other sections along the embankments are freely accessible. Reachable by bicycle from Iseo in about 10–15 minutes; parking on the Via per Provaglio.
The reserve itself is accessible throughout the day. The small visitor pavilion with information material has restricted hours (mainly weekends in season). The reserve administration provides information on current regulations.
Flora & fauna: water lilies, birds and dragonflies
In May and June white water lilies bloom in the former peat-cutting ponds — an impressive sight, most beautiful early in the morning before 9 a.m. when there is barely any wind. Between them grow bulrush, reed and sedge.
Birds to spot include herons, coots, reed warblers and little grebes; in spring waders pass through. In summer numerous dragonfly species live on the ponds. Binoculars (8×42) are sufficient for birdwatching.
Monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa
Directly above the Torbiere stands the monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa from the 11th century — one of the oldest monasteries in Lombardy. From the terrace there is a wide view over the wetland and Lago d'Iseo. On Sundays the monastery is generally open to visitors (times vary seasonally).
The ascent from the main entrance takes 15–20 minutes. From here the wineries of the Franciacorta are just a few minutes away — a beautiful combination of nature, monastery and wine tasting.
A morning in the Torbiere del Sebino
Early - Be at the main entrance (Via per Provaglio d'Iseo) before 9 a.m.; the light is soft and the birds are active. Do not forget binoculars and sturdy shoes.
On the boardwalks - The flat loop over embankments and wooden walkways takes 1-2 hours. In May/June the water lilies bloom; stay quiet and keep to the paths.
Detour - Walk up to the monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa (15-20 min.) with views over the wetland. From there the Franciacorta wineries are only a few minutes away.
Afterwards - Return to Iseo (about 10-15 min. by bike) or continue with a tasting in Franciacorta - a lovely combination of nature and pleasure.
